Friday Faves

Gah I cannot believe it is already Friday and the last day in January! How did that month go by so quick? I thought I would fill ya’ll in on some things I am loving lately before the weekend kicks off.

1. Lunch with my momma. The server kept commenting how much we look alike, what do you think?

2. This

Maybe it is just because my hormones are on steroids right now but this seriously made me tear up. #sogonnadothis

3. My sister just rescued a little chihuahua and I cannot wait to meet her! Her name is Taro and I have a feeling that she is going to give me puppy fever to add to my existing baby fever.

4. I will be 15 weeks on Saturday and I think I see a bump! In order to make sure it is an actual bump and not just bloating though I will hold off on showing photos. No one wants to see bloated photos of themselves on the internet…

5. One of my favourite places on the internet that just “gets me” and my humour is this blog. One time Windy and I went through every single page giggling uncontrollably.

6. Brian sent this to me this morning. Totally made my day.

Have a great weekend!

14 Weeks Pregnant

I love reading other women’s weekly pregnancy updates and now it is even better when I am at the same stage and can compare my symptoms to others and see how they differ (I sound like a huge creeper I know…). So I thought I would start documenting the weekly progressions and later on it will be fun to look back and remember everything. Also, this is for the other creepers like me ๐Ÿ˜›

Weeks:ย 14 (Right now I am 14 weeks and 5 days but lets just say 14 for the sake of this post.)

Total Weight Gain:ย I am not sure. I only get weighed at my doctors appointments and I forgot to look down last time :/

My Body:ย Feeling good! So much better than a few weeks ago. My legs get really restless sometimes but they have always been like that if I am over tired. I am also feeling lots of small movements and can usually tell where the little lemon is laying. There is definitely a pattern starting to emerge ๐Ÿ™‚

Maternity Clothes:ย I haven’t worn any maternity shirts yet but I am wearing one pair of grey leggings/dress pants and skinny maternity jeans quite often. Other than that all my clothes still fit with the minor tweaking for some of them. Ie: the hair tie trick on some pants that fit fine everywhere else, and some shirts getting to be a bit too tight across my chest.

Cravings:ย I have never done this pre-pregnancy but I love Franks Hot Sauce on my scrambled eggs now. So good! Also the last couple days I have been craving ribs when I get home from work like something fierce.

Sleep: Sleeping just depends on the day I had. Yesterday I slept great but the night before it took me forever to get tired and then I was so hungry my stomach felt like it was eating itself so I got up to eat toast (something I have never done before EVER). Every night my dreams are super weird though so that factors in on how I sleep too.

Baby Items Bought/Received:ย Nothing recently, but we did get an aquarium musical nightlight that sits on the edge of the crib for Christmas from Brian’s parents. We are also planning on going to look at paint for the nursery this weekend because boy or girl the idea I have in my head for the wall colour won’t change.

Best Baby Moment:ย Feeling lots of flutters everyday ๐Ÿ™‚

Goals:ย I need to get back into my walking routine. I sit all day at work so I really need to focus and exercise when I get home.

Worries:ย Nothing really. I get lots of assurance everyday that he is okay in there.

Looking Forward To:ย Our next doctors appointment on my birthday ๐Ÿ™‚ Hopefully we get to hear the heartbeat again!

Lemon Dill Tilapia with Couscous

Recently Brian started on a new workout program that involves working out to a different DVD every day while maintaining certain caloric intakes per day (he is doing T25 in case you were wondering). Since he was so supportive when I decided to try my hand at the Wild Rose Cleanse a couple years ago, I told him that I would help him out with the meals. We both like to eat pretty healthy but we both have our vices and one of the biggest ones is chips. Brian loves chip and I will eat them if he is eating them so we don’t help each other out at all when they are in the house. That was one of the hardest habits to break this past week but I am proud of him for staying so determined. His efforts are already showing too, he has already lost close to 10 pounds in a week!

We decided that the easiest way for us to make sure he sticks to his program is by writing out a weekly meal plan for dinners using some of the dinner ideas included in T25 as well as some of our own favourites. We both really enjoy tilapia and have made it a lot over the past few years. I actually introduced it to him when I first moved in as my mom used to make it all the time ๐Ÿ˜‰ So when one of his recipes called for halibut we decided to use tilapia instead. The recipe was for lemon dill halibut tilapia with couscous. I was worried that Brian wouldn’t like couscous (he hates quinoa) but we both inhaled this dinner the first time we made it it was so delicious. We added our own spin to a few things so I thought I would share this recipe as we have ate it 4 times in the last two weeks it is so good.

For the Tilapia

– 1 five pack of frozen tilapia fillets (we buy ours at Save On and it only comes in 5’s so I use the rest for lunch the next day)

– lemon pepper

– dill (I used powder)

– thinly sliced lemon for garnish

Preheat oven to 350 degrees spray a 4 x 11 pan with non-stick cooking spray. Take the thawed tilapia out of the package and rinse gently under cold water; pat dry. Place tilapia in pan and season one side with dill and lemon pepper then drizzle a little bit of olive oil on top of the fillets. Put in the oven for 25 minutes-no need to flip them at all.

For the Couscous

Follow directions on the box. Ours only take 5 minutes once the water is boiled so make sure you time it effectively.

When I made this the first time I added sauteed kale that was seasoned with paprika and cumin and mixed it into the coucous. Last night I added one raw red bell pepper and both were really tasty so just play around with it. You could leave it plain as well (that is what the recipe calls for but I wanted to add in some veggies ๐Ÿ™‚ )

Once the fish is done, place a lemon slice on each fillet and serve with a side of couscous. This is a super easy and really fast weeknight meal that Brian and I are going crazy for right now. Let me know if you make it!

My Weekend in Books

Hellloooo!! So how was everyone’s weekend? Mine was great! We had some friends staying with us who came in from out of town and all of us went to a banquet for Brian’s college baseball team. We go every year to support the team (it is quite an expensive entry fee to go even for alumni) but Brian enjoys seeing some of his old teammates so it is worth it. Some of these guys he has played with or against them since he was 12! Pregnancy made me squeeze myself into some appropriate pants (with the ol’ hair tie trick in the button hole) and tap out at about 10:30 but that was a lot later than I thought I would last so Brian and I took that as a win. Other than that I kept my book reading streak alive and I am ashamed embarrassed going to be honest and say that I lost track of how many books I read. I think one of the days I read two actually but after that I lost count.

We got our friends addicted to playing Heads Up with us as well. I feel bad for anyone that tries to team up against Brian and I because we play so much together we kill it whenever it is either one of our turns. #justsayin

Usually we don’t play teams though, and just have everyone try to give clues as it makes it a lot more fun and we usually only play with about 4-5 people.

Also, if anyone is interested in a list of the books that I devoured last week I can put together a list with a short description and rating of each book (some were A LOT better than others). Some of the better ones that I read were from this list, and I found the rest by myself in the iBooks store. But if reviews would be helpful let me know and I can get started on it!

Reading this much (especially reading some books that were terribly written) it makes me really miss writing. I used to do it a lot and use it as a way to vent but then I got too preoccupied with boys and university and living the dream ๐Ÿ˜› I actually found some of my old writing yesterday and some were stories, some were poems, and some was just venting. But the venting hit me that hardest because it took me right back to when I wrote it in the first place and I knew exactly what I was going through at that time. Moving to a new province right in the middle of my high school career was really hard for me and I kind of forgot how much I struggled with finding my place in this new town without any friends. I am tossing up the idea of writing more and maybe if I get enough courage, sharing some of my stories but that may take some time.

Anyway, how was your weekend? Do anything exciting?

I Think I Have Problem

Seriously guys my reading has gotten out of control. I told you all how I finished a book on Tuesday night? Well since then I have finished three more. THREE! That’s insane! I think I have a problem.ย That is four books in four days and going to be honest here I probably will start another one today.

Brian and I actually cuddled on the couch last night while he was watching a hockey and I used his back to rest my iPad while I continued reading…

That is something addicts do.

I am just on a Young Adult novel kick right now. All the stories follow roughly the same principles (damaged boy meets damaged girl and they overcome their demons to fall madly in love). So seriously though…give it up for a few days or keep reading? (In full disclosure I have already downloaded a few more onto my iPad already so it’s going to be pretty hard to stop). I figure it is not like I am turning my brain to mush just watching TV, instead I am exercising my mind ๐Ÿ˜‰

What do you think? Also, what are you reading? After this YA novel kick I may have to switch genres to give my poor heart a break from all these damaged souls I am reading about so I am open to suggestions!

Outfit of the Day – Maternity Edition

Recently every day it is a bit of a struggle with what to wear to work. Some days I’m bloated and most of my pants don’t fit and others I feel pretty good and want to dress that way. However as the weeks tick on, I am finding myself struggling to find a balance between things that are now too small and things that do not quite fit me yet. At 14 weeks I am still in that in-between stage where instead of having a bump I look like I ate one too many burritos and tried to still fit into my skinny jeans from high school. Maternity shirts just accentuate the “burrito” at this point so they are still out of the running for a bit.

Today is a rare day in that I am wearing no maternity clothes whatsoever! Say whaaaat? Yes it’s true!

Starting from the bottom up:

Boots – I have had these for over 2 years and I live in them. I believe I got them in Detroit at a store called Shoe Circus.

Pants – Hue Denim Leggings which are amazing and still fit awesome.

Shirt – From Winners about 5 years ago? It’s hard to tell in the photo but it is a cowl neck and has a giant pocket in the front (awesome for hiding the tummy right now)

Cardigan – I got this from a Frugal Fashionista event from my sister I think. Basically it is a clothes swap party that Windy used to put on all the time.

I don’t wash my hair more than 3 times a week so on days when it is looking pretty flat this is my go-to hairstyle. Works like a charm ๐Ÿ˜‰

Hopefully, if people find these posts helpful, I will do more!

Let’s take a break from all the pregnancy talk for a little bit shall we?

Some things not pregnancy related that have been going on are:

– I got my passport renewed. Not very exciting I know but it kind of was because I bought the 10 year one and the look of it is quite different from my old one. The only thing that sucks is my passport photo but I am pretty sure everything about the photo is supposed to make you look bad. For example I had to push my hair behind my back (the ladies with long hair know why this bothers me), tilt my chin UP (I know right? Horrible angle on anybody), and she didn’t even show me the photo after she took it. I got to see it for the first time after we bought it in the car. BOOOO! It is not a good look.

Cool thing though: when my kid is older I can tell them that I was pregnant with them in my passport photo.

– My bff Christina and I do a yearly gift exchange for Christmas that combines our birthdays as well (hers is in December and mine is in February). We usually set a $50 limit and can send them whenever we get things organized within that time frame. So of course, I got hers in the mail a couple days ago meanwhile I am only partway collecting all the components. It is a creative process, you cannot rush it ๐Ÿ˜›

Anyway, she got me a gorgeous necklace made by a local person from the Sunshine Coast (where we both are from and where she still lives), tea made from home as well, and amazing comfy pants. The story behind the pants is pretty funny actually. A few months ago I sent her a link to this pair of lounging pants online with this email:

pant_convoSo she ended up buying them for me for our gift exchange. I am totally in love with them, however Brian calls them my Justin Bieber pants because they kind of fit me like this.

– For people that know me they know I am and always have been a bookworm. I love reading and it usually manifests itself into a slight obsession once I start a book. It’s like Pringles, once I pop I can’t stop.

…I think that came out wrong but you get what I mean right? RIGHT?!

prettymouthshutBrian learned really quickly that this is how I read things so it came to no surprise to him when I finished a book last night, that I had started reading that same day. I read Into The Deep by Samantha Young ย and although it is no literary masterpiece, it is a relatively good read that is along the lines of Fifty Shades of Grey but with A LOT better writing, set in a University setting, and not all hardcore as FSG is. I would say the main character’s intense relationships are the reason why I likened it to FSG, not for the sexual component as this novel is categorized more as a Young Adult novel than anything.

The story is of a girl named Charley who, along with her best friend, decide to study abroad in Edinburgh, Scotland for their third year of University. While there, Charley runs in to her high school boyfriend from the United States who applied to study abroad as well for the off-chance that she was still planning on studying in Edinburgh. The book flip-flops between past and present to show how their relationship began, why it unraveled and why she doesn’t want anything to do with him, but still can’t shake the feelings that she once had.

To be honest the main reasons why I read the book were because it was recommended by a blogger that I read all the time and I trust her taste, I was looking for something to read as the new Game of Thrones book has completely lost my interest, and mostly because it is set in Edinburgh. Edinburgh ย was my favourite place that we traveled when I went to England and Scotland in high school for dance. I will have to dig out the old photo books to get the pictures (this was before Facebook if you can believe that) and maybe I’ll share some good ones ๐Ÿ™‚

So thanks for listening to my (non-pregnancy related) ramblings and congrats if you stayed with me until the end of this one. It is a long one! Let me know if you end up reading the book!
