It’s Gone

Well 4 inches are officially gone from my head.

I went from this:

To this:

Hair_newhair_new2(P.S. my hand looks ginormous in this photo but so does my ring so I’m ok with it :P)

I really like it! It feels SO healthy. You know you need a haircut when you ends are dry when you get out of the shower. They were pretty bad but I guess that is what 6 months with no trim will do. I think I will fall even more in love with it when I style it myself (I had an evening appointment so I just went to bed and my hair was still g2g so I rolled with it this morning). They always straighten my hair and since I don’t do it that on a daily basis it takes a bit to get used to. I figure my hair is already straighter than straight so who cares if it is a little bit poofy amiright?

On a less girly note, today is Halloween (yay!), but I don’t get to dress up (boooo). If you are super curious, you can see some of my old Halloween costumes here.  Brian and I (and Mika of course) are doing the 5 hour trek up to Edmonton right after work for Brian’s brother’s graduation ceremony from Police training. I am pretty excited because it is not every day that I get to get all fancied up and Brian gets to wear a suit! The last time I went to a police graduation ceremony it was my mom’s when I was 4. My Bedste dressed Windy and I up in matching plaid outfits including plaid hair bows to put in our pigtails. I wish I could find the photo because Windy’s face is priceless 😛 We were quite a pair back in the day.

So what are your plans for Halloween? Eat too much candy for me please! I will be trapped in a car on a highway.

TO Cut Or Not To Cut

Brian got home from Edmonton yesterday so that means….I finally got to have a good night’s sleep!

That sounds selfish and of course I missed him but I get seriously grumpy without my sleep.

I haven’t worked out since my long run on Sunday and I can definitely feel it. I just feel….soft and need a good sweat. Monday night Hocus Pocus was on and by the time I had one (or two….) glasses of wine I thought it wouldn’t be a smart idea to try to run with a buzz on ;). And last night Brian got home so I wanted to hang out with him, however we were so tired we were in bed by 9 pm! Tonight I don’t think I will have time to workout because I am getting my hair cut after work!!! I haven’t had it cut since May and wanted it long for the wedding. But now that the wedding is over I think now might be the perfect time…

Right now it is at what I like to call “the Kardashian length” which I love but I just don’t invest that much time in my hair on a daily basis to make it look all curly and pretty all the time like they do. So I am leaning to have it look something like this:

hair_idea4 hair_idea

Thoughts?! I probably won’t get bangs but I really like this length. I haven’t had my hair that length since I had a bad breakup in High School and cut my hair off and died it brown :/

oldschool Another bonus is my hair salon is having a promotion that if you make an appointment for a hair cut you get a free brow wax so I am getting that today too! Thank goodness because I haven’t done anything to them in awhile knowing I was having a free wax so right now I have two furry caterpillars above my eyeballs. Not a good look.

So friends what do you think? Cut it, or just trim it? Why is it that the day of a big hair change is the day that you are in love with your current hair style? I need your help so that I don’t chicken out!

Hope you have a great Wednesday!

Marvelous Monday

Well the beginning of another week and unfortunately it is starting off snowy. This is the view I get from my office window today:

However I refuse to only focus on the negatives and instead choose to be Marvelous In My Monday. Thanks Katie for the link up!

The first snowfall of the season is always a bit scary to drive in because everyone is used to dry roads and keep thinking that they can drive the same way when there is snow on the ground. Especially with my new car I am super paranoid and drive like an old lady in the winter most of the time 🙂 #aintnoshame. Brian left for Edmonton yesterday and isn’t back until tomorrow which sucks because I can never sleep well when he isn’t there. Usually I have to watch Netflix on the iPad until I fall asleep which usually works but last night it backfired. I always save the most ridiculous and girly shows to watch when Brian isn’t around so I don’t get made fun of, so last night I started Season One Episode One of The Vampire Diaries….and it sucked me in. Like bad. Coupled with the fact that I already couldn’t fall asleep, I got sucked in (ha get the pun?) and I stayed up a lot later than usual because the show was surprisingly good. And then when I did fall asleep I had super messed up dreams because I had watched 3 hours of vampireness beforehand. Ugh such a bad idea.

So today is definitely a coffee day.

Other than that my weekend was pretty good! I accomplished my goal of being active all weekend with yoga on Friday, a 5 km on Saturday and a cool 7 miles on Sunday. The Goodbye Party/Birthday party on Saturday night was a bit of a bust unfortunately. Only 8 people showed up and the only highlight was all the boys doing a shot from this unmarked bottle of liquor that someone had brought back from Kenya. We are all pretty sure it was straight rubbing alcohol but they did it anyway and I wish we had recorded their reactions (hint: it looked exactly like you think it would look like when someone takes a drink of something similar to rubbing alcohol).

Last night we had family dinner at my parents house (sans Brian of course) which was delicious and I tried kohlrabi for the first time! Ian just boiled it until tender and I ate mine plain (I love me some veggies!). We all agreed it tasted like a mix between broccoli stems and cauliflower. Pretty neat! We enjoyed it alongside a pheasant that Ian had caught (shot).  And then we played Heads Up. Which is a game you download on your iPad that apparently Ellen Degeneres plays with some of her guests on her show (It’s only $0.99 in the App Store)

It is HILARIOUS! You can choose different categories and your team has to get you to say the word on the screen to get as many of the words within a minute. The game comes loaded with a bunch of categories but you can buy extra ones if you want. My family and I chose to buy the Adult Supervision category because we are not awkward. it could get awkward fast if you play this category with the wrong people but honestly the category is worth a try just once (it’s not THAT bad). Some of the other categories are:

– Act It Out (no talking, you have to act out what the word or scene is on the screen)

– Blockbusters (movie titles)

– Icons, Legends, and Idols

– Hey Mr. Dj (have to get them to guess the song name and singer. You are supposed to hum it but we allowed singing as long as you didn’t sing the name of the song)

It was a great time and a good way to get some laughs in while spending quality time with your family. I hope you all have a great Monday!

Happy Friday!

Eff yes I love Friday!

Can you believe it is already the last weekend of October? Where did October go? Where did September go for that matter? Seriously it feels like I am going to blink and it will be Christmas! Brian and I really don’t have plans this weekend except a Going Away/Birthday Party on Saturday night. We were supposed to go to a Halloween party tonight but neither one of us have a costume. I mean I have my old stash from back in the day but I doubt Brian would want to go as a Greek Goddess or a Gypsy. Actually in all of the years that we have been together we have never dressed up for Halloween. Weird hey? I am not sure why. Although this year we won’t even be at home for Halloween because we have to drive up to Edmonton that night. So I don’t even get to secretly indulge in the Halloween candy stash. BOOOOOerns. Now lets reminisce over my old Halloween costumes shall we?

Halloween1Here I was Strawberry Shortcake. The slutty version of course as is almost every costume for 19 year old girls.

Halloween2My Greek Goddess costume that my mom helped me make 😀 I think I wore this for 2 or 3 years straight.

Halloween3I am some sort of cat here. The shirt and leggings I borrowed from a friend and the ears and tail I made and bedazzled all by myself 😉

Halloween4I think this is the last time that I dressed up for Halloween. My sister, mom and I dressed up and stayed in baking Halloween treats. It was actually really fun and a change of pace from going out to the bar for Halloween all the time (I was dressed up as a witch).

On the workout front since I took off two days this week due to work, I plan to be active all weekend (and not cave and buy Halloween candy just to eat it myself). I have got into the habit of doing a long-ish run on either Saturday or Sunday so I will plan on doing that again this weekend. I usually aim for these to be at least 10 km, I have been feeling pretty good though so hopefully I can go a bit further 🙂 Brian and I have been taking Mika on short walks after dinner during the week and she seems to really love it. I used to run with her but her hips are getting pretty bad and so for now short walks are the way to go. It breaks my heart to see her limping around and I feel really guilty if it is from a longer than usual walk. Fortunately we picked up from Medicam from the vet last time we were there so usually if we give her a little bit of that before we go she doesn’t feel any pain. She is 13 though so I think at this point if she can still go for walks at all that is a blessing.

"Take me for a walk mom!"

“Take me for a walk mom!”

So friends what are your weekend plans? What are you going to be for Halloween?

My New Obsession

My personality has either been “Oh my god I love it so much I am never going to stop loving this” or “…meh”. Didn’t matter if it was movies, food, TV Shows, whatever. My sister actually used to hate watching movies with me because I would watch them on repeat until I could quote the entire movie by heart. I was quoting Wayne’s World way before I never knew what the words meant. Which led to lots of embarrassing moments for my mom when I would quote a specific part of the movie in front of her friends.

I am still the same way. I can watch the same TV show non-stop for a few weeks and then all of a sudden it just drops off and I don’t care about it anymore. There is no in-between. Brian really hates this because usually my TV show affinity is always directed at the Food Network and as I have mentioned before he absolutely hates Guy Fieri.

So it is absolutely no surprise that I am really obsessed with sweet potatoes. Specifically sweet potatoes mashed with coconut oil and that’s it. Oh my god it is so much heaven. However it is kind of embarrassing because it legitimately looks like I brought baby food with me for lunch:

SweetPotatoApologies for the blurry photo. The only thing more embarrassing about bringing what looks like baby food to work with you for lunch is getting caught taking a photo of said lunch by a coworker. (source)

Questions to answer in the comments:

1. Do you have a current obsession whether it be food, movie, TV show, or anything else?

2. What is your favourite way to eat sweet potatoes? I am open to suggestions on this but you really HAVE to try them mashed with coconut oil before I will listen 😛

Can’t believe tomorrow is already Friday! This week flew by!

Newlywed Questions

Having only been married for 4 months I am no way an expert in marriage or relationships but I do know a thing or two about some of the questions people just love to ask newlyweds.

1. When are you having kids. This is a big numero uno for people to ask just out of curiosity or whatever. Just a heads up: this question begins the day of your wedding. Just wait for it. I know a lot of people are (maybe) just trying to make conversation but it gets old pretty fast when you are already getting asked ALL THE TIME (for the record, the answer no we have no plans for kids at this present time). This question is comparable to when you just get engaged and people ask all the same questions such as, how did he propose? When is the wedding day? However with the kids question it involves inquiries about my body and that kind of weirds me out a bit…am I alone on this?

2. Did anything change after getting married? I think this question specifically targets couples who have never lived together before marriage and who are not used to their partner’s habits on a 24/7 basis. Brian and I’s story is a little bit different in that regard because when I moved in with him I moved in with him and 3 other men. Yes that’s right I was so blinded by love I moved in with 4 dirty men into an ex-party house. It wasn’t awful but it did take me 3+ months of going room to room cleaning on my hands and knees before I felt completely comfortable there. I still have nightmares about the bathroom *shudder*.

yuckWe have been alone in the house for just over a year now and I think in some weird twisted way, having to put up with 4 guys makes having to deal with one a cake walk ;).

3. Where did you go on your honeymoon. This question is the least annoying because we had an amazing time on our honeymoon (part I & part II) and loved talking about it. Although it gets hard trying to recount all the details when its a few months later. I almost guaranteed that this question is a segway into question #1 though so just a heads up.

DSC_7061I have learned a lot in my first four months of marriage. It is true when I say nothing really changes once you get married but on a more emotional level it does. The mindset is no longer “me against the world” but more like “the two of us can take on the world”. It is reassuring to have a partner in life that is there for you no matter what. I truly believe that I found my soul mate and he is the person that I am supposed to be with for the rest of my life. Which is why I don’t mind answering the typical newlywed questions because I would do it all over again in a heartbeat if that meant I got to be with Brian.

Redemption Tastes Sweet

Our Thanksgiving dinner kind of helped get my cooking mojo back after this horrible fruit pie disaster but I have to admit I was still kind of shaken. So this weekend when Brian and I were invited to go over to our friends house for a BBQ and we were in charge of bringing the dessert I figured that this was a sign that I needed to redeem myself with the notorious fruit pizza. Verdict? Nailed it.

I was so on my game this weekend I woke up Sunday morning and made pancakes for everyone and then started some chili in the slow cooker to freeze. Who am I?!

I was still pretty sore on Friday from using the bench press on Thursday so I took Friday off from working out. Saturday I ran 6 miles though and then did an easy 5 km on Sunday.

The fruit pizza and I have a tumultuous history that goes way back to my early teen years when I made it for the first time with my friend Christina (it is her mom’s recipe). So now dear friends I will share it with you because honestly it is super easy, very delicious, and once I tell you how to make it, it will become clear why me screwing it up was so embarrassing. photo 3(1)(yes this is a photo from the one that I failed at, I forgot to take a photo of the masterpiece from the weekend :()

So first up, make the crust. You will need:

– 2 cups all purpose flour

– 1/2 cup icing sugar

– 1 cup cold butter (I used margarine)

Mix the icing sugar and flour together in a medium sized bowl. Cut in butter until the mixture resembles crumbs. My margarine was quite gooey so I added it in stages to make sure it was evenly distributed. Then press mixture onto a greased pizza pan until it is evenly distributed and about the size of a plate. (This weekend I needed to have the dessert in something that was easy to transport so I tried pressing mine into a glass pie plate. It worked well, however the crust was quite a bit thicker than I would like.) Then pop the crust in the oven at 350 degrees F for about 12 to 15 minutes or until the crust is lightly browned (FYI the pie plate took quite a bit longer because it was so thick).

While the crust is in the oven beat together:

– 1 (8 oz) package cream cheese

– 1/3 cup white sugar

– 1 teaspoon vanilla

Beat this mixture until smooth. Spread evenly over cooled crust (make sure it is cool or else it will be hard to spread). Now the fun part! Pick whatever fruit you desire to arrange on the pizza. I used strawberries, kiwis, and a banana. But you could also use pineapple, blueberries, raspberries…whatever you would like! For my fruit pizza I used:

– 1 cup strawberries

– 1 banana

– 2 kiwis

I always add a glaze on top but you don’t have to if you want to cut down on the sugar intake. The glaze just kind of blends everything together and adds a bit more flavour. It kind of acts like the cheese on a pizza 😉

To make the glaze you will need:

– 1 cup pineapple juice (if you used pineapples for your pizza you can use the leftover juice from the can!)

– 1/2 cup white sugar

– 2 tbsp corn starch

– 1 tsp lemon juice

Mix the ingredients in a saucepan over medium-high heat and make sure there are no lumps from the cornstarch (Tip: I mix half of the juice and the cornstarch in a cup beforehand and that ensures that the cornstarch dissolves correctly). Bring to a boil while stirring constantly. Once boiling keep stirring it for about two minutes as it gets thicker. You will know when it is done because it will coat a metal spoon. This change occurs fast so make sure you keep an eye on it or it will burn very quickly. I usually end up using about 1/3 of this mixture on the fruit pizza but it depends on your own preference. For easiest distribution I use a tablespoon and drizzle the glaze on top of the fruit until I am satisfied. However if you want to just dump the entire pot of glaze on top that is okay too. If you do that make sure you scream YOLO* at the same time and then send me a picture because that would be legendary.

*YOLO = You Only Live Once. It is quite popular to use it on Social Media with a hashtag (#) when people do something dumb or something they may regret later.

So there my friends is the infamous fruit pizza recipe. I hope you enjoy it and now you can all unanimously laugh at me now that you realize what an easy recipe I screwed up. Ah F*** it whatever, YOLO amiright?!
